ABOUT JOSEPH

Born in 2003 and from Southport, Joseph was introduced to music at six. In 2019, he was admitted to Chetham’s School of Music as a joint pianist and composer under Jeremy Young and Doug Mason, alongside A Levels in Music, English Literature and History and a Level 3 EPQ for which he achieved three A*s and an A in 2021. In 2024 he graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music as a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours in Piano and Composition on the intensive three-year programme, studying under Prof Adam Gorb and Dr Murray McLachlan. Notably, Joseph was the first ever student at the RNCM to complete his undergraduate degree both as an intensive and joint study student; further, becausethe RNCM is the only conservatoire in the UK to offer a three-year course, this would also make him the first student in history across the country to achieve this too! Finally, in 2025 he again graduated from the RNCM’s intensive one-year programme as Master of Composition

and Musicology, studying primarily with Profs Adam Gorb, David Horne and Simon Clarke. In the same year, he was a composition finalist for the RNCM’s Gold Medal. Since graduating, he has been aiming to attain his FRSM and LMusTCL diplomas in piano and music theory. He is proud to have attended both Chetham’s and the RNCM and to have had his works workshopped and performed at both institutions. His previous concert commissions include music for a commemoration of the centenary of WWI, amongst others. In 2020, he was highly commended for BBC Young Composer with his piano set Fragments of an Unstable Mind, worked with the BBC Singers on his setting of Christina Rossetti's When I am Dead, my Dearest in 2023, and in the same year premiered his first Piano Concerto with the RNCMSO, under the baton of Matteo dal Maso, a work for which he was also awarded a grant by the Pendle Young Musician’s Bursary. Joseph's performance experience comes through various festivals and recitals at venues including the Stoller and Bridgewater Halls; alongside accompanying in shows; conducting his own works on stage; and masterclasses. As a skilled pianist and very capable sightreader, Joseph frequently works in musical theatre, most often as a musical supervisor/director or rehearsal pianist, but also as an orchestrator, arranger, pit musician, sound designer and technician. His main aspiration is as a theatre composer, aiming to premiere an original work in the coming years. He is also tutor in piano, composition, and music theory for the Southport Music Academy, also running numerousworkshops, masterclasses and recitals with the CEO, Claire Kelly. Joseph is available as both a tutor and freelance MD/pianist across the UK.

TUTOR

A composer holding a decade's experience, Joseph has been honing his craft since the young age of 11, having works performed and recorded regularly at both Chetham's and the RNCM while being recognised in national competitions like BBC Young Composer. Inspired by the greats of the 19th and 20th Centuries as well as jazz, his music works well in both concert and cinematic settings. He is also a very capable orchestrator and arranger.

The piano has been Joseph's emotional output for 15 years; he loves to play anything from Bach and Beethoven, to Rachmaninov and Scriabin, to jazz standards! He also loves improvising, especially as a tool for composition. Joe has performed numerous recitals in various halls and has also been an accompanist to others. He also regularly performs in nursing homes, hotel lobbies and bars. He is also an able saxophonist, heavily influencing his jazz writing.

Joseph loves to teach, and works for the Southport Music Academy (SMA) under CEO Claire Kelly, under which he teaches piano (including improvisation), music theory, composition and saxophone. Joseph's practical lessons place emphasis on music theory. For information about lessons with Joseph, click 'Learn more'!
