TUITION

Joseph loves teaching in a 1:1 capacity and works in partnership with the Southport Music Academy under CEO Claire Kelly to deliver piano, composition, music theory and saxophone lessons.

Joseph believes some modern teaching practises to be flawed, being designed purely push as many students through exams as possible while capitalising on tuition books which teach at a patronisingly slow pace – because these books are often aimed at children, many have been misled: children are much more intelligent than we often credit them for! Joseph's direct teaching approach comes from the view that a student should be taught to their own syllabus and at their own pace; not one prescribed by a book or exam board. To this end, he also encourages students to engage with music theory from early on: theory is intrinsic to the study of music, and many students often only study it to a Grade 5 level in order to progress with their practical exams, resulting in confusion, difficulty and frustration, as well as gaining only a superficial understanding of what they're doing – so, as well as offering it as a standalone subject, Joseph does regular theory work with his students, right from day one of tuition – this involves both teaching theory as part of students' practical discipline, as well as separate theory lessonsAs a result of this teaching approach, Joseph's students develop at their own rate – which is typically very quickly!

As one of Joseph's students, you'll have access to his network of learners, allowing for a range of other opportunities; he regularly teaches group classes/dual lessons, workshops and masterclasses, and there are often performance opportunities!

If you or your child would like lessons with Joe then feel free to get in touch with him via the Contact form.
