PIANIST

Joseph had piano lessons from the age of six, but only began to actively enjoy music from about eleven as he first started to compose. Aside from his own works, his repertoire is very eclectic: Joseph's favourite composers to study are Rachmaninov, Chopin, Liszt, Kapustin, Scriabin, Beethoven and Bach (at the moment!) but he also really enjoys playing Grieg, Mendelssohn, Bortkiewicz, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, and Gershwin, as well as many jazz standards and musical theatre numbers. As somebody who prefers the kinaesthetic learning approach, he also often likes to play by ear or with lead sheets – this ties well with improvisation, which for Joseph is also a fundamental compositional tool. As a frequent improviser, Joseph is also a competent répétiteur – he also has other accompanying experience and enjoys working with others in chamber and soloist accompaniment environments. He's particularly keen on the piano trio! Joseph is also a saxophonist and frequently gigs on alto or tenor, playing various standards and improvising.

Joseph enjoys performing and takes the stage regularly in various settings, from the concert hall to the cocktail bar – he often encores with a structured improvisation for fun!
